First,
let’s print this guide. Turn your printer on, then in your Internet Browser,
click File, then Print.
Windows Update is a feature in Windows 98 & Windows Me that allows you to connect to the Internet and update your version of Windows automatically. Most updates are ASW recommended and those are the ones we will concentrate on. If you don't know what version of Windows you have, here is how to find out. On your desktop, right click on the My Computer icon, then left click on Properties. The System Properties box will open, and it will list the version of Windows that you have.

Now click on OK to close that box.
Next, let's print a list of ASW recommended updates for your operating system. Click on the appropriate link below and print out the page the same way you did this page.
Once you print the update list, you can close that browser window. On our update page you will notice we list recommended, user preference, and non recommended updates. We are only going to concentrate on the ASW recommended updates.
Step 1. With both the update list and this guide by your side, click on the Windows Update link located in the top bar of your Internet Explorer browser.

Step 2. When you get to the Windows Update site, the following box may pop up twice. Click Yes on both and allow the Update Control to install.

When Scan for updates appears, click on it to scan for new updates.
Keep in mind that depending on your computer configuration not all updates my be listed. But be sure to only install the ones that are on our ASW recommended list.
Step 3. Three categories will appear. Critical Updates, Windows 98 or ME, and Driver Updates. The number next to each reflects the total updates available for each category. By default, Critical Updates are placed in Review and install updates. Using the ASW Windows Update List, click on the category for the listed update you want to install. Click the ADD button to select the update, and it will be placed in Review and install updates. Dial up users will want to install one at a time. High speed Internet users may select multiple updates by clicking ADD for all updates you wish to install. Some updates can only be installed by themselves. If so, you will be notified of this and only that update will be selected.

Next, click on Review and install updates to install the selected updates.

Step 4. Click on the Install Now button to begin the installation of the update(s). When the License Agreement box pops up, click the Accept button to begin.
Step 5. Once the installation is complete, you will be prompted to restart Windows. Click the OK button to restart the computer. A reboot is necessary to finish the installation process. When you get back to Windows, click on your Internet icon and reconnect to the Net. Again click on the Windows Update link in your browsers Tools and repeat step 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, until all ASW recommended updates are installed.
